Art, Dissent, and Utopia

Reference Books

The library has a number of reference books of potential use for research in this area. For example:

  • The Prestel Dictionary of Art and Artists of the 20th Century
    Ref N33.P74 2000
  • Grove ArtThe online version of the major English-language art encyclopedia.  Includes a small library of art images, as well.
  • The Dictionary of Art.
    Ref N31.D5 1996 (The print form of the encyclopedia.)
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library:  An online collection of reference books.  You can search a single eBook, or across an eBook collection.

Books

In PacifiCat, search under keywords such as “avant garde”, “modern art”, or subjects like “art, modern” or “art and society” or “avant garde”. For example, look at:

  • JSTOR: full-text of the backfiles of hundreds of scholarly journals, including history, archaeology, and more.
  • ARTstor:  An image database that covers a broad range of art, from ancient times to the present.
  • Art Full Text (1984-present) and Art Retrospective (1929-1984)
    Great places to look for journal articles on art-related topics.  They index journal articles, yearbooks, museum bulletins, bibliographies, exhibition listings, interviews, and film reviews.  Some full text available.
  • Historical New York Times:   Full page images of the news from 1851-2001.
  • FIAF International: Bibliographical resource offering coverage of hundreds of the world's foremost academic and popular film journals right up to the present day.
  • Arts and  HumanitiesCovers a wide range of humanities topics, and how they relate to politics.
  • Project Muse: Provides access to the full text of over 100 scholarly journals in the arts and humanities, social sciences and mathematics. Coverage varies for each journal.
