Located on the basement level of the University of the Pacific Library, the Special Collections department provides access to a broad range of manuscript collections (primary sources) and books (secondary sources) on California history. The manuscript collections contain original historic documents from throughout California history that contain information on a variety of topics. Manuscript collections and books in Special Collections cannot be checked out, and may only be used in the department’s reading room. The reading room is open from 10-5 Monday-Friday.

Records for most of the materials in Special Collections can be searched in the Library's online catalog. The catalog records for manuscript collections provide summaries of their content. Books that have a location of “Western Americana” indicated in their catalog records are housed in Special Collections.
Many manuscript collections also have online finding aids. Finding aids are inventories that describe the contents of each collection in detail. The online finding aids can be searched or browsed. They are part of the Online Archive of California, a database of finding aids for archival collections at over 100 California institutions.
All of the manuscript collections have print versions of their finding aids available in the reading room. Copies of the “Guide to the Manuscript Collections” are also located in the reading room. The Guide lists the manuscript collections in alphabetical order with brief descriptions of their content. It also has an extensive name and subject index. The Guide is essential to research on California topics because it includes information on small California manuscript collections that do not have online finding aids.
