Week 11 Recommendations

  1. Emerging Adults in America: Coming of Age in the 21st Century
    • This book asserts that the timing and meaning of “coming of age,” which is defined as reaching full adult status, has changed significantly. That distinctive developmental stage between adolescence and young adulthood is increasingly termed “emerging adulthood.” These series of essays offer insight about this new developmental stage and its ramifications in relationships with parents; views about love, sex and marriage; work; college; and religion.

  2. Children of Other Worlds: Exploitation in the Global Market
    • This book is a reflection on children and their social function, drawing largely upon a comparison between industrial Britain in the early nineteenth century and present-day Bangladesh. The author considers how the structural abuses of humanity are part and parcel of the global system. Moreover, how do other cultures, traditions, and environments influence how child labor (a construct from one country) is exported to another country? -- Adapted from the book description

  3. Lives Per Gallon: The True Cost of Our Oil Addiction
    • The infamous "pain at the pump" runs much deeper than our wallets, argues Terry Tamminen. Petroleum may power our cars and heat our homes, but it also contributes to birth defects and disorders like asthma and emphysema, not to mention cancer. In this ebook, Tamminen takes a hard look at these and other health, environmental, and national security costs hidden in every barrel of oil. --Taken from the book description.

  4. The War for Muslim Minds: Islam and the West
    • Kepel examines the impact of global terrorism and the ensuing military operations to stem its tide. He questions the United States' ability to address the Middle East challenge with Cold War rhetoric, while revealing the fault lines in terrorist ideology and tactics. Finally, he proposes the way out of the Middle East quagmire that triangulates the interests of Islamists, the West, and the Arab and Muslim ruling elites. Kepel delineates the conditions for the acceptance of Israel, for the democratization of Islamist and Arab societies, and for winning the minds and hearts of Muslims in the West. -- Taken from the book description.
