Objective: to develop a process for locating information to support communication planning for schools. Emphasis is on planning and implementing crisis response strategies.
Glossary: a few terms you need to know!
- Database: an electronic index to the periodical literature. Increasingly, reference tools and entire books are also found using databases.
- Citation: a reference to an information source, either book or periodical.
- Popular Sources: magazines for the popular market, such as Time or Newsweek.
- Scholarly Sources: periodicals for scholars and students. Written by experts and supplied with bibliographies
- Ebrary or E-Journals: a listing of online books and journals. Ebrary is searchable by subject.
- Full-Text Sources: the entire content of the source can be viewed online.
- PacificLink: a utility that searches among resources at Pacific to help you locate the article online on in print at the library.
- InterLibrary Loan: a service that allows you acquire material from other libraries. Allow ten days for regular service, some materials can be provided by FAX for an additional fee. See the Interlibrary Loan page for additional information.
- Library Resources: the following are library resources that can be accessed by enrolled Pacific students from on and off-campus. For more information, visit the library's off-campus access page.
- PacifiCat: catalog of books, journal titles, videos, etc. owned by the library. Includes electronic books.
- Academic Search Premier: an interdisciplinary database of scholarly and popular periodicals. Can link full-text.
- Communication and Mass Media Complete: scholarly and popular citations with a focus on communication, including public relations. Limit to full-text, if needed.
- Education Full-Text: a database if articles, most full-text, that deal with topics in education.
- ERIC: a database to the literature of education. A “mixed bag” of access, use PacificLink to see how to find full-text or library holdings.
Web Resources: using Google, you can locate sample crisis management communication plans. For example, http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/model.html is a link to an extensive plan from the Virginia Dept. of Education.
Search strategy: think in terms of keywords that describe your topic, such as crisis management. Combine using AND. For example: crisis management AND school*. The "*" is a symbol for truncation.
