Citation Styles

Research writing and scholarship require that proper credit be given to the books, articles, and other materials students use in composing papers and presentations. There are several different citation styles available.  At the University of the Pacific, most professors will request that you use one of the following citation styles:

The examples are organized into two categories: Print Sources and Electronic Sources.  In each category, there are examples showing how to cite the various types of resources in the body of papers and presentations, and in bibliographies/reference lists.

Some citation styles (APA, MLA, Chicago [Author/Date system], Turabian [Natural and Social Sciences]) use parenthetical “in-text” references to research resources, and often call the list of works cited a “reference list”.  In the examples given here, parenthetical in-text references are identified with [PR] and reference list entries are identified with [RL].

Other citation styles (Chicago [Arts & Humanities] and Turabian [Humanities])  require the use of footnotes or endnotes, and often call the list of works cited a “bibliography”.  In the examples given here, footnotes and endnotes are identified with [N], while bibliography entries are identified with [B].

Since the examples given here do not encompass every possible type of research resource, students may still need to consult the individual style manuals located in the Library’s reference section.

For APA:
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
Ref BF76.7 .P83 2001
For MLA:
MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers
Ref LB2369.G53 2003
For Chicago:
Chicago Manual of Style
Ref Z253 .U69 2003
For Turabian:
A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations
Ref LB2369 .T8 1996
