The following text comes from the mounted plaque in the entranceway to the library:
This library was developed in three stages spanning thirty-two years. The Martin Library, constructed in 1955, was the first building devoted exclusively to library services. It was named in honor of its principal donor and publisher of the then Stockton Record, Irving Martin, Sr.

In 1966, Mr. and Mrs. Donald B. Wood of Lodi led library expansion efforts with a major gift in memory of their son, John Thornton Wood. Wood Memorial Hall was added to the north facade of the original Martin Library.
The Martin-Wood building served the university's library needs until 1985 when construction began on a major renovation and expansion plan. Leadership funding for this effort came from the William Knox Holt Foundation of San Francisco and Regent Holt Atherton. The new structure was named the William Knox Holt Memorial Library in honor of "Bill" Holt, a native Stocktonian, son of Benjamin Holt.
But the story doesn't end there. In 2003 the most recent round of renovation and development began with the expansion of the Martin and Holt wings of the building. The basement was expanded at the same time to allow for much greater growth of the library collection. Following the renovation of the Martin Wing in early 2006, the main floor of Wood Hall, the circulation area, and the lobby area were completely redone. The Davey Café was installed and dedicated in the fall of 2007.

This view looks east at the half-finished Wood Hall and the original west entrance to the library. Not even a million bucks for a four-storey building!

This intersection was paved over in the 1980s as part of the construction of the Holt wing of the library. The current entrance to the library is just off the left edge of this photo. Yes, a road ran across the width of campus back then!

The original west-facing entrance to the library was completely removed in the 1980s as part of the construction of the Holt wing and the reorientation of the library building. Now you know why the lettering that looks so randomly placed on the side of the library is where it is...
