>> Health Sciences Branch

Health Sciences Branch Library student employees have a wide variety of responsibilities including staffing the Circulation desk and assisting patrons with basic computer trouble-shooting in addition to re-shelving library materials, processing items for the library collection, and shelf reading. Student Assistants also perform clerical functions such as photocopying, typing, and running errands. There is some lifting and light cleaning as well.

This position requires the ability to work with the public and master several skills. Students hired must enjoy working with the public, be able to work independently, and be willing to accommodated varied and/or flexible scheduling. Accuracy is a must! Self-motivation is a plus!

>>TECHNICAL SERVICES and INTERLIBRARY LOAN (open  7:30-4:30 )

Student assistants in Technical Services help open and distribute mail, campus flyers and memos to individual mailboxes.  They unpack boxes and check items received against packing lists.

Processing items for the library collection is a large part of the job. This includes placing date due slips and security strips in items and property stamping individual items, as well as placing bookplates in books as appropriate.  Placing security strips in journals and any other special labeling items is also part of processing.

Interlibrary Loan is a major function of Technical Services.  Student helpers assist in finding requested items, copying articles, and preparing shipment . 

Student assistants help with bindery preparations of journals, theses, and dissertations. They also perform clerical functions such as filing, typing, running errands and making photocopies.  They perform some lifting.  Other duties and projects are assigned as needed.

The IC Assistant's main role is to facilitate the effective use of technology in the Library's Information Commons. They help students further their educational experience by assisting and instructing them in the use of technology. >>Multimedia Studio Assistant

Media Studio Assistants help library patrons complete creative projects in the library's multimedia studio. They expand on the role of the IC Assistant to provide Pacific students, staff, and faculty with assistance using multimedia design software and technology.

Applicants should have familiarity with:

  • Common image editing tasks in a standard image application such as Photoshop or Fireworks
  • Basic web-page creation and understanding of file paths using Dreamweaver or GoLive
  • Student web publishing using web-docs
  • Different types of audio files (mp3 vs. wav, for example) and basic editing of them with Audacity or similar software
  • Video editing and DVD creation using iMovie, Vegas, or Premiere Elements, etc.

Note: Media Studio Assistants will work most of the semester as an IC Assistant at the library IC desk for $8.25/hr. In the final four weeks of the semester they will work in the library’s multimedia studio for $8.75/hr. Therefore, all applicants for the Media Studio Assistant position will be first judged on their suitability for the IC Assistant position (see above).
