SCIENCES LIBRARIAN

The University of the Pacific Library is seeking an energetic, innovative Sciences Librarian to join the library faculty in furthering the educational and scholarly goals of the library and university. This is a tenure track position.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver a range of innovative and traditional library services that facilitate the curricular and research needs of students and faculty in the sciences, including chemistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, biology and other disciplines.
  • Provide general and course-related reference and research assistance and library instruction; cultivate relationships with teaching faculty in relevant subject areas; employ new technologies in pursuit of teaching and learning; assist in achieving and assessing the library’s information competency goals; and select print and electronic resources for the collection.
  • Engagement in research and continued professional development to meet requirements of promotion and tenure is essential.
  • Actively promote library resources and services through outreach efforts.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the unique character of the scientific literature to academics and practitioners.
  • Some evening and weekend work is required.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science
  • Minimally, one-year of college level chemistry and/or biomedical sciences.
  • Commitment to high-quality public service within a flexible and continually evolving academic library environment.
  • Ability to apply new technologies to library services.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated creative approaches to problem solving.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and to foster teamwork in a collegial environment.
  • Experience providing general as well as in-depth discipline oriented reference service.
  • Experience providing general as well as discipline specific library instruction.
  • Recognition of the value and importance of informational competence in an academic setting.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree or major in chemistry or the natural or biomedical sciences.
  • Knowledge or experience of life sciences or allied health professions.
  • Collection development experience in primary areas of responsibility, i.e., chemistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, biology, etc.
  • Experience working with medical literature and allied health professionals.
  • Proficiency in searching major science databases and reference sources in all formats.
  • Experience providing reference and research service through virtual means, including Instant Messaging.
  • Knowledge of trends and issues in academic libraries of the 21st Century.  
  • A demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity is a preferred qualification for this position.

  • Faculty rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, tenure track, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Twenty-four days’ vacation, 15 holidays/seasonal days; excellent support for professional development; tuition remission; University benefits are described at www.pacific.edu/hr.
  • Salary is competitive and commensurate with background and experience.
  • Beginning this year, the University contributes an amount equal to 10% of salary toward a TIAA-CREF pension account.
