Lawton Harris Folk Dance Collection

Folk Dance Camp at UOP dates back to 1949. Professor Lawton Harris taught folk dancing at College of the Pacific and at his folk dance club. After his death in 1967, his collection of folk dance records and dance descriptions were donated to the committee operating Folk Dance Camps. Eventually, they found their way to the UOP Libraries.

Collection Contents

The Harris Folk Dance Collection contains:

  • Over 10,000 ten- and twelve-inch records (78 RPM).
  • 700 long-playing records (33⅓ RPM).
  • 4,200 seven-inch records (33⅓ and 45 RPM).
  • Videotapes of almost all dances taught since 1975, demonstrated by master teachers
  • A complete set of handbooks (syllabi) for Folk Dance Camps, containing about 1,600 dance descriptions.
  • Numerous other folk dance camp syllabi, and about 14,000 miscellaneous dance descriptions
  • A sizeable library of hard and soft cover books on folk dance matters.
  • A large collection of folk dance periodicals, including complete files of Northern Junket and Sets in Order, and many years of Viltis and Let's Dance.

Questions about the collection should be directed to Rhonelle Runner, Music and Humanities Librarian. Telephone: (209) 946-2570.
